'When the Machines Came'

a folk tale by Ed Mayo, with illustrations by Frankie Mayo

"There is a story, that once upon a time in a town in the far north of England, the machines came…"

'When The Machines Came' is a retelling of the history of cooperative enterprise as a folk tale. In an age of Big Tech and the shift to surveillance capitalism, the story asks whether democratic ownership and platform co-ops can offer an alternative once again for a fairer economy.

The text is written by Ed Mayo, at the close of eleven years working in the cooperative sector in Europe. The artwork is by Frankie Mayo, making this a family production.
