Why Collective article sets?
Many people write about Fair Trade-related issues, and many people write about Gender Empowerment and Equity too, doing so from a wide range of perspectives, locations and disciplines. The Journal of Fair Trade actively encourages collaboration, and inclusion of a far wider range of voices than would be typical in an academic Journal. We would therefore like to publish collective article sets on specific themes. There is a great deal of added value when diverse voices, experiences and ideas are presented side-by-side; they provide more food for thought; they can spur more reaction and consequential learning. A commodity or product-based article set can help us to explore a range of dilemmas and challenges affecting a specific supply chain.
Why Gender Empowerment and Equity as a subject of special focus?
There is a great deal written around Gender Empowerment and Equity in a wide context as well as in relation to Fair Trade. Yet there is a need for comprehensive and careful thinking about Gender Empowerment/ Equity and Labour Rights within Fair Trade; the persistent struggle facing women within rural farming communities, the ongoing gap between the assistance given to fair trade producers and cooperatives and harsh realities of life for many women working as Fair Trade farmers and craft producers. Many and diverse challenges remain for Women to achieve Gender Empowerment/ Equity and Labour Rights as a whole and within the realm of Fair Trade.
For this call, we are looking for writers able to take these challenges on and discuss Gender Empowerment/ Equity and Labour Rights, particularly within Fair Trade. We welcome academic, personal, cooperative or business experiences covering stories of initiatives within communities of Fair Trade producers or between producers and Fair Trade Suppliers as well as examples of where Gender Empowerment/ Equity and Labour Rights are falling short. We would like this broad perspective so as to give an honest appraisals and evidence of the problems that have yet to find resolution.
Themes might include: the burden of female fair trade farmers and homemakers, Fair Trade producer cooperatives and the long-running male dominance of their management and decision- making processes, trafficking and modern slavery and best responses to combat such practices, the persistent incidence of child labour and how this effects Women of the community and their loss of empowerment.
All contributions and proposals for Gender Empowerment/ Equity and Labour Rights will be welcomed gratefully received. We would aim for 4-5 contributors published in a single issue on this theme. Your proposed contribution may be stand-alone, or, positioned for inclusion in any of the following standard sections of the Journal of Fair Trade.
The Gender Empowerment/ Equity and Labour Rights process will be coordinated by The Editor-in-Chief, and a Guest Editor. Please do not hesitate to come to us with any ideas or questions you may have regarding a submission.
